With open arms I welcomed this new album, and with good reason. Dwight Yoakam is perhaps best known for his first major hit, the 1986 double-platinum Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. He soon followed up with Hillbilly Deluxe in 1987, and went on to sell over 23 million records, accumulating two Grammies in the process.

Dwight's style has been described as rockabilly, with such greats as Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Buck Owens, and The Eagles contributing to it.

From the lively 'No Such Thing' to the #1 CMT hit 'The Back of Your Hand', this album is chock full of clean-sounding country goodness. The accompaniment with this album is top-notch, including excellent steel work on 'Fair to Midland', and Willie Nelson singing backup in 'If Teardrops Were Diamonds'. 'The Late Great Golden State' is a very nice upbeat song, with great vocals, guitar, and banjo work.

The album is mixed with traditional sounding slow songs, and upbeat almost raucous songs. Overall, it holds a very good true country feel to it, sounding much better than almost anything to come out of Nashville in recent times. I highly recommend it if you are a Dwight Yoakam fan, or want to try some country without the pop!
