Some of you may remeber the song "LA Song" from the Lilith Fair days--that was one of the weakest tracks on a cd called Screaming for My Supper by an artist named Beth Hart. She has a new one out called Leave The Light On and it is even better than Screaming. She has a raspy voice, more Macy Grey than the Janis Joplin she often gets compared to, but what she does share with Pearl is a deep committment to strong, aggressive, blues based, gospelly rock. She has some smoldering ballads, including the best tale of the after affects of abuse, "Leave the Light On" ("Daddy ain't that bad he just plays rough/I ain't that scared when I'm covered up.") However, she can also rip the stitches out on some barn burners like the anthem to being bad "Broken and Ugly." However, it is not all drugs and distruction. There is the romantic power ballad "Lay Your Hands on Me" and the hymn like "Fields of Clover." All in all really good stuff from a women who actually has the chops to call herself rock.
