I've been a fan of country music for close to 40 years now, and my favorite country singer has always been and still is Loretta Lynn. Not many artists still make real country music and real country songs anymore, but Loretta has never wavered, and her "Still Country" album from 2000 is as country as "Loretta Lynn Sings" from 1963. From the sounds of it, her album "Still Woman Enough" to be released this year will be as country as any.

For me, Loretta epitomizes country music at its best. There has never been a singer who could impart so much sincere emotion and personality into her songs. The LADY sings from the depths of her heart, with a sincerity and a realism that only one who as been there can put across. Her songs are real and personal, and meant for those who are already her fans, rather than marketed in an attempt to gain new fans. This outstanding woman has always danced with the ones that brought her.

I've heard a lot of people say "things change", and that "change is inevitable", but I thank God that Loretta hasn't changed, as its impossible for me to imagine her being able to change for the better, either personally or artistically. Loretta has always been proud of being what I am, and that is country. The way she has chosen to reveal the details of her life, the bad parts along with the good, enables her fans to know her on a more personal level than is possible with other artists, especially those of today, who on the whole, are merely manufactured images. Country music is REAL, SINCERE and PERSONAL. When an artist or record label loses sight of these three things, they are no longer country, regardless of the instrumentation.

There is something in Loretta's voice that strikes a chord in my soul. There has never been an artist like her, and I doubt there ever will be again.

I have an incredible amount of respect for artists who write their own music. Alan Jackson writes quite a bit of his own music and is a very talented man. My hat is definately off to him and the rest of the legitimate country music songwriters/singers.

For me, the classics would be a toss-up between George Jones, Johnny Cash, and Merle Haggard, with Brad Paisley, Mandy Barnett, and Alan Jackson fighting it out for top "newer" country artists.

And in response to the "how are (the possum) as a groupe" person above, The Possum is George Jones. And he's great as a groupe.

I guess i must be out of touch with the new country, my favorites start with Kitty Wells the original queen of country music. From there Marty Robins, Hank Snow, Jim Reeves, Johney Cash, the Statler Bros. Patsy Cline, Jim Ed Brown ( who could forget the old lamplighter ). No one sings How Great Thou Are like the Statlers.

I've noticed that I tend to like male country singers more than female country singers... I haven't quite figured that out yet.
